Joshua is often asked questions regarding the gear he carries in the field when photographing or the process he uses to create prints once he returns. For those who are interested, the following is a list of vendors we trust, products we rely on, and information sources we refer to often. We hope that this information will be helpful to you in understanding the process behind our imagery, and also in pursuing your own photographic vision.
ORGANIZATIONS:
North American Nature Photography
Association
|
The North American Nature Photography Association (NANPA), founded in 1994, is the primary organization in the country (and on the continent) that is focused on the needs of nature photographers and the editors, publishers, and other businesspeople with whom they work. NANPA holds an outstanding annual summit that includes keynote addresses and presentations by luminaries in the field, issue roundtable discussions for working pros, and unparalleled networking opportunities. In addition, NANPA also offers a photographic equipment insurance program for members, sponsors high school and college photography students with interest in focusing on the natural world, and serves to coordinate the profession's response to timely issues such as access to federal lands and the rapidly changing world of digital submissions. Joshua is honored to serve on NANPA's Ethics Committee. Please note, however, that the views expressed on this web site are those of Images For Earth and its owners, not of NANPA. West Coast Imaging, based in Oakurst, California (just South of Yosemite National Park) has done almost all of our scanning and fine art printmaking since we began making prints several years ago. Owners Rich and Susan Seiling, along with Terrance, Jeff and the rest of the WCI gang, have always provided us with consistently friendly and attentive service. More importantly, they have also provided us with uniformly excellent results. I can happily recommend their services. The WCI web site also includes a steadily expanding trove of information relating to digital printmaking and digital imagery. Whether you're a stalwart film shooter, in the process of converting to digital imagery, or have already "gone digital" from the camera to the print, there's sure to be something in their data mine that will expand your knowledge of the subject. |

The New Lab is our source for the reproduction-grade 35mm and 70mm duplicate transparencies we use for editorial submissions and projection sessions. The New Lab's "dupes" are simply outstanding. Many companies make them for less, but nobody makes them better. The New Lab also offers top-quality E-6 film processing services. For once-in-a-lifetime images, extreme push- and pull-processing, midroll mishaps and other "special" situations where "regular" processing might seem risky for any reason, The New Lab has consistently risen to the challenge. As an example, due to poor lighting and inclement weather, this image of a coyote in Yosemite Valley was pushed 3˝ stops (i.e., shot at ASA 600 instead of the manufacturer-intended ASA 50). |

Joe and Barbara Levine offer special pricing on E-6 film processing for nature, landscape, "fine art" and travel photography. Calypso currently charges only $5.75 per roll, or $6.30 with date/number imprinting, with no additional charge for push or pull processing (note that all prices are, of course, subject to change). The lack of additional charge for push processing is great for trips involving certain types of shooting (such as birds and aerial photography) where many rolls are pushed to gain the additional speed or contrast. I have found the processing at The New Lab (see above) to be slightly more consistent, particularly in situations that involve extreme processing variances. The quality difference is usually not significant, however (I've had only a few frames harmed out of many thousands), and Calypso's pricing is much better (nearly $5 cheaper per roll, and more when push or pull processing is involved). For high-volume shooters (100+ rolls on my last outing, for example) that cost difference adds up to real savings extremely quickly. As a result, Calypso handles the bulk of my film processing. |

Light Impressions carries the best assortment of archival photographic storage materials in the business. We rely on Light Impressions for all of our transparency storage pages, as well as clear-view sleeves used to "double-bag" images for extra protection. A free catalog is available.
Light Impressions is also the source for the custom-cut archival matting we use for our fine art exhibition prints. Compared to the local framing companies we investigated, Light Impressions offered better-quality mats, more precise cutting, and significantly better pricing. Best of all (and crucially, given that it isn't a local company), Light Impressions’ Customer Service department treats us right -- when they discerned we were a business rather than a one-order consumer, they automatically assigned us a helpful personal account representative. For photographers interested in exploring do-it-yourself framing, Light Impressions definitely merits an inquiry. |
PHOTOGRAPHIC EQUIPMENT:
|
I've been a Nikon shooter since I first got my start in photography working for my hometown newspaper during college. I have been consistently impressed with Nikon's product quality and, just as important, durability. Every 35mm image displayed on this website was shot using Nikon camera bodies, including top-end cameras like the F5 and F100 and lightweight backpacking models such as the FE-10. Most of them were also taken with Nikon lenses. |
